The effects of the addition of lysine to commercial feed given to captive black iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) were evaluated in terms of growth and feed digestibility. Twenty‐eight‐day‐old black iguana with an initial weight of 5.5 ± 0.3 g were housed individually in cages measuring 45 × 45 × 45 cm. The experiment lasted 150 days. The ambient temperature ranged from 28 to 35°C with a relative humidity of 60 to 95%. Treatments consisted of the addition of different percentages of lysine to the feed (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3%, dry matter [DM] base). There was a linear response (P < 0.01) in daily gain (68, 112, 118, and 151 mg/d) and daily intake (251, 289, 297, and 337 mg/d) for levels from 0 to 0.3%, respectively, as well in the growth in head size, snout–vent length, and total length. The digestibility of DM, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber were reduced linearly (P < 0.01) as lysine levels increased. Intake and digestibility were negatively correlated (r = –0.74; P < 0.001). It is concluded that the addition of lysine to the black iguana diet in the first months of life is important to stimulate growth and intake. Prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata Link.) is indigenous throughout most of the continental United States and Canada to 60°N latitude and is well suited to marginal land too wet for maize (Zea mays L.) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.). Evaluations of prairie cordgrass in Europe and North America indicated it has high potential for biomass production, relative to switchgrass, in short‐season areas. Our objective was to describe morphology and biomass production and partitioning in mature stands of ‘Red River’ prairie cordgrass and determine biomass production of natural populations on marginal land. This study was conducted from 2000 to 2008 in eastern South Dakota. Mean biomass production of mature stands of Red River was 12.7 Mg ha?1. Leaves composed >88% of the biomass, and 60% of the tillers had no internodes. Belowground biomass to a depth of approximately 25 cm, not including roots, was 21 Mg ha?1. Tiller density ranged from 683 tillers m?2 for a 10‐year‐old stand to 1140 tillers m?2 for a 4‐year‐old stand. The proaxis was composed of about eight phytomers, with rhizomes originating at proximal nodes and erect tillers at distal nodes. Vegetative propagation was achieved by both phalanx and guerilla growth. Differences among natural populations for biomass were expressed on gravelly marginal land. However, production, averaged across populations, was low (1.37 Mg ha?1) and comparable to ‘Cave‐In‐Rock’ switchgrass (1.67 Mg ha?1) over a 4‐year period. The large carbon storage capacity of prairie cordgrass in proaxes and rhizomes makes it useful for carbon sequestration purposes. Prairie cordgrass should be compared with switchgrass and other C4 perennial grasses along environmental gradients to determine optimum landscape positions for each and to maximize bioenergy production and minimize inputs.  相似文献

Hyptis pectinata L. Poit (Lamiaceae) is known popularly in Brazil as “sambacaita” or “canudinho” and is used in the treatment of inflammations, bacterial infections and ache. The antinociceptive activity of the volatile oils of six genotypes, at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body wt., were investigated using abdominal writhe models induced by acetic acid and hot plate tests. The volatile oils of all the genotypes are composed mainly of sesquiterpenoids. All the genotypes showed antinociceptive effects in both models used; the SAM002 genotype showed the major inhibitory effect at dose of 100 mg/kg body wt. These results suggest that the volatile oil of H. pectinata has peripheral (writhe reduction) and central (time delay of thermal reaction) effects. These observations indicate that H. pectinata may be useful as an analgesic drug.  相似文献

Aim To delimit the distribution of matrilines of the black iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata), detect potential contact zones between them, and test the hypothesis of geographic concordance in the structuring of matrilines with respect to genetic structuring across the nuclear genome. Location Pacific coast of Mexico in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán in the lowlands adjacent to the western end of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Methods Tissue samples were obtained every 10–20 km along a transect across the range of three previously described mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clades of C. pectinata. Iguanas were genotyped with 11 nuclear microsatellites and maternal lineages were inferred based on mtDNA sequences. Geographic structure and geographic concordance between biparentally and maternally inherited markers were analysed with clustering methods, FST and NST indexes as well as haplotype networks. Results Geographic structure was evident for both markers and the existence of contact zones confirmed. Nevertheless, the distribution of nuclear and mtDNA genetic variation is not geographically concordant. Four matrilines exist in the area, whereas only two nuclear clusters occur. A contact zone between nuclear clusters extends along a distance of c. 60 km, and introgression is evident in individuals from several localities. Main conclusions High levels of genetic diversity were detected on the western coast of Mexico. Historical and contemporaneous processes seem to shape the distribution of genetic variation in C. pectinata. There are no evident geographic, environmental or ecological barriers that coincide with genetic subdivisions, and the observed mtDNA structure is likely to be the result of past climatic changes. The less structured distribution of nuclear genetic variation is consistent with the homogenizing effect of male‐biased dispersal. Our findings have implications for the taxonomy and conservation strategies for this threatened species, and highlight the fact that geographic analyses of both cytoplasmic and nuclear genetic variation are important for the meaningful inference of evolutionary and demographic histories.  相似文献

Haemoglobin I from Lucina pectinata is a monomeric protein consisting of 142 amino acids. Its active site contains a peculiar arrangement of phenylalanine residues (PheB10, PheCD1 and PheE11) and a distal Gln at position E7. Active site mutations at positions B10, E7 and E11 were performed in deoxy haemoglobin I (HbI), followed by 10 ns molecular dynamic simulations. The results showed that the mutations induced changes in domains far from the active site producing more flexible structures than the native HbI. Distance analyses revealed that the heme pocket amino acids at positions E7 and B10 are extremely sensitive to any heme pocket residue mutation. The high flexibility observed by the E7 position suggests an important role in the ligand binding kinetics in ferrous HbI, while both positions play a major role in the ligand stabilisation processes. Furthermore, our results showed that E11Phe plays a pivotal role in protein stability.  相似文献

Deforested tropical areas are often colonized by competitive ferns that inhibit forest succession. In thickets of such a fern (Dicranopteris pectinata), we investigated methods for initiating restoration of tropical montane forest in the Ébano Verde Scientific Reserve (Dominican Republic). In clearings in the thickets, growth and survivorship of 18 common early‐ and late‐successional woody species were tested, with and without fertilizer (poultry litter). Three years after sowing, life history did not affect survivorship, but early‐successional species grew faster than late‐successional species (height increase 153 ± 103 cm vs. 81 ± 67 cm [mean ± 1 SD]). Inga fagifolia, a late‐successional species, and Alchornea latifolia, an early‐successional species, had 160 ± 62 cm mean height increase, and low mortality rates (<4%). In contrast, four late‐successional species (Cyrilla racemiflora, Myrcia deflexa, Prestoea acuminata var. montana, and Mora abbottii), and one early‐successional species, Ocotea leucoxylon, had approximately 39% mortality and height increase of 43 ± 48 cm. Brunellia comocladifolia had high mortality (55%), but averaged 340 ± 201 cm height increase, and was the only species whose growth was improved by fertilization. Fertilization improved survivorship of only one species, Piper aduncum. After three years, soils in the clearings had low pH and available P and did not differ significantly from soils in thickets. However, based on the growth rates and survivorship of sown woody plants, these soils did not appear to be a barrier for restoration. Although a complementary study demonstrated substantial natural regeneration, active planting should be used to increase plant density and diversity, especially where natural regeneration is poor.  相似文献

Armases angustipes (Grapsidae) crabs were recorded on 31.5 percent of Aechmea pectinata inflorescences, a common ornithofilous bromeliad in rain forests of southeastern Brazil. Crabs foraged mainly in the morning and used newly opened flowers, usually damaging the corolla, consuming the stamens and stigma, and interfering with hummingbird visits. This florivory may reduce the reproductive success of A. pectinata, both directly through consumption of flowers and indirectly by reducing pollinator visits.  相似文献

Digestibility, feed efficiency, and the effect of sex were evaluated in black iguanas (Ctenosaura pectinata) using two commercial pellets (rabbit and chicken). The experiment was performed in 80 iguanas in a completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement 2×2 over 105 days. No differences were detected by food type in weight gain (chicken vs. rabbit: 121 vs. 154 mg/d) and daily intake (chicken vs. rabbit: 524 vs. 551 mg/d), but differences were detected (P<0.05) in feed conversion (chicken vs. rabbit: 6.45 vs. 4.47). Rabbit pellets showed higher digestibility than chicken food (P<0.01) in dry matter (59.8 vs. 41.4%) and NDF (55.4 vs. 43.6%), respectively. Sex had no effect in any of the variable responses. Black iguanas can be raised since 6 months old in captivity with commercial food designed for rabbit or broiler. No special physiological adaptations occur in black iguanas correlated with change in feeding habits during ontogeny. Zoo Biol 30:349–354, 2011. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献
